Riley Construction delivered general construction services for an 11,300 SF dry storage expansion at Birchwood Foods’ Kenosha production facility. As a long-standing leader in the food and beverage industry, Birchwood Foods manufactures a wide range of branded and private-label beef and pork products for major national foodservice and retail partners. Their operation produces more than six million pounds of product each week and supports over 750 employees across four U.S. plants.

The new addition provides food-production-grade sanitary dry storage designed to support Birchwood’s high-volume output and rigorous safety standards. The facility includes two dock positions, an interior drive-in dock, and a consistent 35-foot clear height to optimize product flow and forklift movement.

A core challenge was constructing an addition directly adjacent to an active food production area without compromising food safety, quality, or 24/7 operations. Our team coordinated closely with Birchwood’s staff to maintain strict sanitary controls and seamless production continuity.

Site conditions added complexity. Soft soil profiles required deep foundation support, including 39 caissons and a 10-inch reinforced structural slab with integral curbs. This system provides the strength needed for heavy forklift traffic while still meeting the stringent cleaning and durability requirements of a modern food processing environment.

This expansion strengthened Birchwood Foods’ capacity, supported ongoing growth, and reinforced their position as a major player in the food and beverage sector.
