Back to basics: What makes a great construction partner.

Building for education should focus on three essential elements. The first is value. Delivering the best value generally means prioritizing function over flash. The second is timing. Schools can’t wait to open after a break, so staying on schedule is key. The third element is quality: building long-lasting, durable facilities for students, educators, and taxpayers.

GOALS

As the initial project in the Kenosha Innovation Neighborhood, this project represented the bringing to life of years of hard work, planning, and vision. The project was a public-private partnership of multiple stakeholders including the Kenosha Area Business Alliance (KABA) Kenosha Unified School District, and Gateway Technical College.

Keeping everyone informed, aligned, and empowered to make decisions was key to the project’s success. Everyone wanted the new facilities to be the best value, highest quality construction delivered on schedule for the students, faculty, and community.

SOLUTIONS

As an integral preconstruction partner, Riley planned long lead material and equipment procurement to ensure the new facility could be completed during school break. Lab equipment had to be moved from the existing school to the new school, so it was critical that the layout of the equipment, power, and mechanical systems matched seamlessly.

Through early planning meetings, weekly meetings, and the field-proven InSTEP process, Riley was able to identify several areas for cost savings. With client alignment and approval we quickly made changes that allowed us to use the savings to add significant value to the project.

RESULTS

Completed a month before students returned, the project delivered a sought-after STEM-focused choice school, serving as a springboard into the technical trades and a partnership with Gateway Technical College’s higher education programs.
